The County Borough has good communication links with the major cities via the A465 Heads of the Valleys road westwards towards Swansea and West Wales, eastwards to the Midlands via the M50 and to London via the M4.

Rail links to London exist at Cardiff and Newport and a line to the Midlands passes through Abergavenny just 10 miles away. Funding has also been secured for the re-opening of the first phase of the passenger railway line from Ebbw Vale to Cardiff
