Blaenau Gwent is situated in South East Wales, 20 miles north of Newport and 30 miles north east of Cardiff, and lies in the northwestern corner of Gwent at the head of the Sirhowy, Ebbw and Clydach Valleys. Blaenau Gwent is an area of contrasting landscapes dominated by rugged mountains looming peacefully over the valley communities. It extends from the Brecon Beacons National Park in the north to Swffryd in the south. The landscape ranges from industrial, urban settings to beautiful rolling countryside within the National Park.
The County Borough covers an area of approximately 10,900 hectares with an estimated population of 68,930 with most of the population concentrated in the towns of Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Nantyglo and Blaina. Blaenau Gwent has always had a strong sense of community and is proud of its industrial and social history.
The environment is naturally green and Blaenau Gwent is situated within a network of excellent transport communications, with a wide range of cultural and recreational facilities and good educational provision. Serious offences are extremely rare and community based policing is helping to reduce the comparatively low crime rate.
