We've faced some tough criticism of Social Services, however, we are committed to making a fresh start and we're confident that the future will be very different. We have already made great strides to turn around the directorate and we're building on that momentum. A new management structure has been introduced to improve communication and provide a clearer focus on management accoutability in frontline services.

Strengths and Achievements 

• A strong caring ethos in a number of service areas such as day care, occupational therapy and home care.
• A good range of children's services in the community, especially in respect of support to families.
• Progress in improving some aspects of care management and reviewing practice.
• Recruitment and retention problems in key areas have been resolved and much of the workforce is stable.
• The Social Services directorate has achieved an Investors in People award.
