The County Borough covers an area of approximately 10,900 hectares with an estimated population of 68,930. Of this population 52% are Female and 48% male,(mid year estimates 2003) with 99.2% being of white ethnic origin. (Census 2001)

As the largest single employer within the area the Council employs a diverse workforce of just over 4,000 employees across four service directorates.  The age profile of our employees is as follows:-

• 16% aged between 56 and over.
• 31% aged between 46 and 55
• 28% aged between 36 and 45
• 19% aged between 26 and 35
• 6% under 25 years of age.
